As the prices of LED chips and packaging has been down for years, there might be more acquisitions between corporates and some collapses for small and medium sized manufacturers. For Nichia, automotive lighting, laser and mobile backlight products are the major growth drivers in 2018. Nichia has developed upgraded automotive lighting products to correspond to new headlight designs. The company has kept improving its laser power. Speaking of the progress of Mini LED, Nichia is ready to mass produce Mini LED products, said Takashi Sakamoto, Principal Technical Officer of Optoelectronics Products at Nichia. According to Sakamoto, the company has solid plan for its clients with Mini LED backlight applications. As for Micro LED, Nichia is capable of producing experimental products; however, Sakamoto expected that it will take at least four years to commercialize Micro LED and to enter the mass manufacturing phase. Nichia as the world premier LED maker has been working on Micro LED for a long time. Aside from making its own Micro LED chips, the company also develops transfer technology and related equipment.
